Training + Awareness = High Efficiency
There are a number of the most destructive human behaviours that are scientifically identified. To name a few; to lie, steal, cheat, committing suicide, and more. As far as safety is concerned, the focal point will be on BAD HABITS in this article. Bad habits contribute greatly to Operational Behaviour in the workplace, as such, individual’s efficiency on producing high productivity rates remains compromised.
WHAT MAKES BAD HABITS VICIOUS IN ATTAINING HIGH PRODUCTION RATES
Studies have shown that as much as a particular habit has a high risk and that risk is well-known by the entity performing that well-known risky task, they still find it hard to quit. A simple example would be to quit smoking, it is considered as a bad habit.
In the workplace, be it a veteran or new employee, the majority imitate one another’s “way of operating any equipment”, even if the Safety Operating Procedure is by-passed, it becomes a culture…a bad habit that could result in Lost Time Injury, which compromises production.
BAD HABITS ARE EASILY JUSTIFIABLE
- “It hasn’t hurt me yet…”
- “My Supervisor is almost on retirement and had been operating it this way without having an accident…”
Such stigmas lead to high incident rates, organizations deemed to being under-performing in production, frequent visits from the department of labour and the likes…the list is endless. The most unfortunate fact about any habit, good or bad, is that the more it is done, the more difficult it is to rid it. However, every habit can be broken.
There are number of solutions designed to control bad habits, one of such is understanding that stories can change the brain, which is what processes the information in a human mind.
“…as social creatures who regularly affiliate with strangers, stories are an effective way to transmit important information and values from one individual or community to the next.”

Now, what Grashyo Health & Safety proposes is for safety professionals to consider the formula, TRAINING + AWARENESS = HIGH EFFICIENCY. If organizations could invest in innovative OHS training and Awareness Programs and Campaigns that involve true story-telling, high efficiency on Operational behaviour can improve, which would stain the production rate.
